The aim of this special issue is to provide a snapshot of the latest and emerging bioinformatics technologies and their application in biomedical research and clinical environments. Recent advances in biological sciences and systems biology have created a tremendous amount of bioinformatics related data. Bioinformatics tools have been developed in order to exploit this abundance of information and transform it into useful knowledge including data mining techniques, aiming to discover hidden knowledge. The next step of the overall process is to manage and integrate the extracted information with biomedical knowledge and use it in clinical environments. The potential of this discovery and integration is very high, as it will allow the transformation of the bioinformatics knowledge into useful personalized information, enhancing diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. The ultimate target of the current and future applications will be to move from bench to bedside. Such an integration will provide with technologies and tools of high accuracy and value, and this must be demonstrated in various applications and diseases. We invite authors to submit their original papers and contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:

  • Bioinformatics technologies for biomarker discovery
  • Management and integration of biological and clinical data
  • Diagnostic and prognostic decision support based on Multiscale biological models
  • Mining of bioinformatics data
  • Bioinformatics applications from bench to bedside
  • Systems biology approaches for complex diseases
