IEEE 1847: Location Services for Healthcare April 2017 Face-to-Face Meeting

Announcing an IEEE LSH Face-to-Face Meeting! The working group has been discussing a draft LSH Conceptual Information Model standard for many months. It is time to get together in person and finalize our direction. The goal is to submit for approval within the next few months so we can begin work on impactful standards (e.g. data exchange, LS medical device integration, accuracy testing).

Working Group Scope:

1. To develop a conceptual information model, and
2. To develop common terminology. This framework will serve as a foundation for additional standards such as Use Cases, Data Interfaces, and Medical Device Integration. This activity seeks to:
   • Improve interoperability between LS products and other systems
   • Help to avoid redundancy of converging LS products
   • Maximize functionality of an overall LS system
   • Improve consumer confidence in LS adoption

Importance of Location Services (LS) Standards

LS, a collection of complimentary location technologies such as RTLS, RFID, GPS and others, is now common-place in the consumer mobile market enabling many features from search context to wayfinding. This information service is rapidly becoming mission critical for inpatient and outpatient healthcare. There are a multitude of use cases to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations such as Asset and Supply Tracking, Temperature Monitoring, Surgical Workflow, Hand Hygiene, Clinical Workflow, and many others.

Today, healthcare providers are faced with a complex buying decision since the available LS products are often niche and proprietary resulting in different data models, different data flows, and unique architectures. While some of these differences represent value-added differentiation, most are artifacts of a lack of available standards and the desire for suppliers to compete with one another for new business. Providers are thus reluctant to risk large, enterprise class investments until industry maturity and alignment is achieved.

Because of the mid-town location, which is near the Farragut North, Farragut West and Dupont Circle Metro stations, there are a fairly large number of hotel options, including lodging in Crystal City/Alexandria near National Airport. Any hotel located at/near the Dupont Circle Metro stop is within walking distance of our office. The hotel list is attached (IEEE DC Local Accommodations) which contains properties that are convenient to the IEEE Washington office, with whom we have a negotiated IEEE rate.
***Please note is that room rates will vary and that during off-peak/low occupancy periods, it is often possible to bargain for lower rates. IEEE negotiated rates are only available subject to room availability. The best advice is to ask for their best rate when calling. If the rate is higher than the IEEE negotiated rate, then ask if they will honor the IEEE rate. In many cases, you will find you can get a better rate than the IEEE rate. In other cases, the IEEE rate may not be available.

Travel To Washington:

Three major airports — Reagan National, Dulles Int’l and Baltimore-Washington Int’l all provide air transportation convenient to the Washington Metropolitan area. Reagan National is the closest and provides Metro access (via the Blue/Yellow lines, transfer to Red Line). Cab/coach to/from Dulles and BWI typically requires 45-60 minutes at a cost of $50-75. Amtrak provides train service to Washington’s Union Station, which also links via Metro’s Red line. The Washington Flyer Coach Service provides direct transportation between Dulles Int’l and the West Falls Church (VA) Metrorail Station.

Travel by Washington Metro:

The Washington Metro subway and bus system is an inexpensive and convenient means to reach most destinations in Washington and the surrounding suburbs of Maryland and Northern Virginia. Metro serves Washington National Airport and Union Station (Amtrak rail service). Coaches connect Dulles Int’l Airport with the West Falls Church Metro Station. Amtrak connects Baltimore Washington International Airport with the Union Station Metro.

The IEEE-USA Washington office is located just a short walk from either the Farragut North (Red Line) or Farragut West (Blue & Orange Line) Metro stations. You can get complete rail and bus information from the Washington Metro-Area Transit Authority.

The Washington Post also makes available information on the Metro System, including down-loadable maps and a station-finder.
