Call for papers: Special Issue on Image-guided Therapies – IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology

For many diseases, imaging has become an essential component of both initial diagnosis and continued monitoring of response to therapy. The availability of real-time imaging – in part made possible by the advent of digital imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT), ultrasound imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – has allowed for the use of imaging during interventional procedures for intra-procedural guidance, so-called image-guided therapies (IGT). IGT include a number of therapeutic interventions where image-guidance is an integral part of planning, monitoring, and confirmation of successful therapy delivery. Intra-procedural imaging may be used to guide placement and positioning of therapeutic devices, inform selection of therapy parameters, and adapt therapy delivery.  For the planning of IGT, computational modeling based on patient-specific imaging data has been widely investigated. Specific examples of IGT include: cardiovascular catheter interventions; cardiac catheter ablation; image-guided radiotherapy; image-guided drug delivery; tumor ablation; and chemo-embolization.

Potential topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning of image-guided therapies (IGT)
  • Computational modeling for simulation of IGT delivery
  • Imaging and image-processing methods for monitoring and assessment of IGT
  • Robotic systems for assisting delivery of IGT
  • Novel IGT devices and methods
