Sentinel lymph node harvesting during minimal invasive surgery has the potential to improve cancer patient prognosis, treatment and recovery. The use of a magnetic tracer is preferred to bypass radiation and strict regulations. This work introduces a novel minimal invasive magnetic detection prototype, utilizing a nonlinear detection principle (differential magnetometry) for magnetic identification of sentinel lymph nodes. The iron content sensitivity, depth & spatial sensitivity, and angular sensitivity are analyzed. The results are satisfactory and the magnetic route is promising as an alternative to the radioactive technique and as an addition to the fluorescent technique for laparoscopic surgery.
