Banu Onaral, a pioneering force in biomedical engineering and a global advocate for technology’s role in advancing healthcare, passed away on December 18, 2024, at 74. Her transformative contributions to science, innovation, and education leave an enduring legacy.

Dr. Onaral served as the H. H. Sun Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Drexel University, where she founded and led the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems from 1997 to 2014. Her groundbreaking research in biomedical signal processing, functional brain imaging, and translational medicine positioned her as a global leader. She established the CONQUER Collaborative, a multidisciplinary observatory dedicated to advancing brain imaging and healthcare technologies.

As a past president of the IEEE EMBS (1999) and a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, and AIMBE, Dr. Onaral shaped the future of biomedical engineering through her leadership and mentorship. She received numerous accolades, including the TÜSEB Special Award in 2023, for her contributions to functional brain imaging and her efforts in fostering global partnerships.

Dr. Onaral’s vision extended internationally as she forged academic and innovation partnerships in Turkey, China, and beyond, bridging cultures and advancing science. Her work transcended borders, earning her recognition as a champion of collaboration and progress in healthcare technology.
