Richard Costello

A 1988 graduate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Richard Costello underwent training at Beaumont Hospital and later at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, Baltimore, USA.  He is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine in Respiratory Medicine at the RCSI and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Beaumont Hospital working in asthma and neuromuscular conditions, including Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.

Professionally, he served as Chair of Education at the European Respiratory Society and previously served the Royal College of Physicians as Vice President, as well as roles as Director of Research and National Specialist Director of Training in Respiratory Medicine. He has been President of the Irish Sleep Society, President of the European Board of Pulmonology, and is a Fellow of the European Respiratory Society.

Academically, he work is focused on studying how digital technology can be used to optimise outcomes in patients with respiratory disease. He has copyrighted and licensed technology related to assessment of inhaler adherence. As Principal Investigator his work is supported by grants of over 15 Million from the EU, industry partners and the Health Research Board of Ireland. He has published over 180 research papers and he holds 5 patents and is the founder of a spin-out company Phyxiom.
