Guy Littlefair received the M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from Cranfield University, U.K., prior to undertaking his Ph.D. at Nottingham Trent University, U.K., in the area of manufacturing engineering. He served on the academic staff at Southampton University and also Southampton Solent University where he became the Reader in mechanical engineering. In 2006, he relocated to New Zealand and became a senior academic at Auckland University of Technology and served in a number of roles, including Head of Mechanical Engineering and ultimately Head of School. Currently, he is a Professor and the Head of School of Engineering at Deakin University, Waurn Ponds, Australia. Dr. Littlefair is internationally regarded as an expert in the field of machining, having lead teams of researchers in England, New Zealand and now Australia focusing on the machinability of materials. In these leadership capacities He has worked with some of the world's most innovative research-led manufacturing organizations, including Rolls Royce, DeBeers, Toyota, and Land Rover. Drawing on this expertise, the Geelong Manufacturing Council recently appointed him a Director of the Board. He has written extensively on opportunities in the advanced manufacturing space for Australasia, based on highly innovative approaches to product design and development. In 2012, Engineers Australia recognized him as an “eminent member” of the Profession by electing him Fellow of the Institution. He is also a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ), the Royal Society of New Zealand and the UK Engineering Council.
