VP Finance Elect: Bruce WheelerBruce Wheeler

Bruce Wheeler has been an EMBS member since 1974 and has served EMBS and the Biomedical Engineering community in many roles over his career. Most visible to EMBS have been his service as President (2013-14), Editor-in-Chief of TBME (2007-12), and general chair for EMBC 16 in Orlando. He received the EMBS Distinguished Service Award in 2016 and became a Fellow of IEEE in 2008. He is also a Fellow of AAAS, BMES, AIMBE, and IAMBE.

Dr. Wheeler’s career began as an electrical engineering faculty member at the University of Illinois, with service including Associate Head for Undergraduate Affairs for the ECE Department, Chair of Neuroscience, Founding and Acting Head of the Bioengineering Department, and faculty of the Beckman Institute. In 2008 he moved to the University of Florida’s BME Department, where he served as Acting Department Chair.

Dr. Wheeler has had an active research program in Neural Engineering, advancing the development of engineering tools (microlithography, signal processing) for the understanding of in vitro neural systems (“brain on chip” technology).

Dr. Wheeler has an outstanding record advising biomedical engineering students, including involvement in starting the BS/MS/PHD programs at Illinois and the BS program at Florida and recently recording a MOOC for EMBS (DzSo you want to be a Biomedical Engineerdz). His current position as Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering focuses on creating courses for the new UC San Diego Biosystems Engineering major.

VP Technical Activities Elect: Colin J.H. BrenanColin J.H. Brenan

Colin J.H. Brenan is a serial life sciences entrepreneur and senior executive with over 30 years experience in scientific research, project management, product development, strategic marketing and financing of early-stage life science companies. Dr. Brenan is currently a Founder/Chief Commercial Officer of antibody drug developer HiFiBiO Ltd and Founder/CEO of the single cell instrumentation company 1CellBio Inc. Formerly he was Managing Director of the Monsanto-Atlas Seed Fund Alliance at Atlas Venture (Cambridge, USA) where he identified and invested in seed and early-stage life science companies. Prior to Atlas, Dr. Brenan was Director of Strategic Relationships for the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (Boston, MA).

VP Publications Elect: Amir A. AminiAmir A. Amini

Amir A. Amini is Professor and Endowed Chair in Bioimaging at the University of Louisville where he performs research in the area of biomedical imaging and image analysis. He received the B.S.degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, with high honors when at 18 he was the youngest graduate of the University, and the M.S.and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, in 1984 and 1990 respectively. After postdoctoral work in biomedical imaging (1990-1992), he was at Yale as Assistant Professor (1992-1996). He then moved to Washington University in St. Louis where he was Assistant and then Associate Professor with tenure (1996-2006). He has been at the University of Louisville since August 2006. He is the recipient of the National Institutes of Health FIRST Award in 1998 and University of Louisville Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning for his course on medical imaging. He received the Distinguished Lecturer Award from the IEEE EMBS in 2013, has served since 2013 on the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing (BIIP), and served on the EMBS Administrative Committee (Ad Com) for the term 2016-2018. He has served on numerous NSF and NIH study sections and has mentored 45 M.S., Ph.D, and postdoctoral advisees throughout his career. He has ~190 publications including a number of books and proceedings, and has five provisional or issued US patents. Dr. Amini is a Fellow of AIMBE and of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.
