The Nordic Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics (NBC 2020)
On behalf of the organizing committee and the Icelandic Society for Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics, I am happy to welcome you to the 18. Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics, NBC 2020 held in Reykjavik September 17th to 20th 2020. The conference attracts scientists from all over the world for a fruitful exchange of thoughts and sharing of results. The conference will feature some outstanding keynote lectures, live demonstrations and workshops on special topics. Our common goal is the application of physical laws, formal problem-solving methods and physiological and medical knowledge to create methods and devices for the benefit of human health. The importance and impact of this goal on life and welfare of the human are steadily growing as technology, skills, and knowledge evolve. Conferences like this are an important tool in this process enabling scientists to discuss and compare their ideas and results, receiving feedback on own work, dissipating results, learning to know each other, finding partners and co-workers, learning new things and enjoy the company of colleagues from distant places for few days.
The Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics is held for the second time in Iceland. The first time was in 2002 which was the 12th NBC. It was with great success and we look forward to hosting this important Nordic conference again next summer. It is a vitalization factor and a logical step for a small society with a rapidly growing activity in medical research and industry to host a conference like this. Since then the Reykjavik University has established a curriculum in Biomedical Engineering with the highest number of attending students compared to other engineering disciplines. Companies working in gene research have obtained international acknowledgment and medical device manufacturers are doing well. Accompanying the 18 NBC there will be a health technology and science exhibition, which the conference participants can attend. This exhibition attracts companies active in the Nordic region. Companies will promote their products with presentations and demonstrations.
Also accompanying the 18 NBC are meetings of international organizations.
Icelandic nature has much to offer. The volcano island is known for its picturesque mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and hot springs. Here you will find the original “Geysir” a name that has been adopted many languages. “Surtsey” the island that was created in a volcano eruption in the sixties and “Heimaey” the largest of the Vestman islands where the town was buried by ash and lava in 1973, are examples of the many geological attractions. Wildlife is also rich in and around Iceland. Birds are in a huge variety, whales watching is a popular attraction and rivers are full of salmon and trout. Icelanders are the posterity of Vikings that populated the island around 1100 years ago. Rich sagas and culture are worthwhile. And last but not least you can enjoy the northern lights in this period of the year around solstices.
We are happy to welcome you to the 18th NBC 2020 September 17-20, in Reykjavik.
Having said this, I also like to apologize for the postponing of the conference from 2019 to 2020. The reason for that is that due to misunderstanding in the process of disseminating the information about the conference it did not reach many of our colleges in the Nordic and Baltic Countries. We detected this too late and it would have been irresponsible to go on with the conference under those circumstances. I hope that has not caused to much trouble.
